About the Museum
Ca’ Rezzonico is a magnificent Baroque palace on Venice’s Grand Canal that immerses visitors in the world of 18th-century Venice. Once home to the noble Rezzonico family, whose legacy includes Pope Clement XIII, the palace itself is a highlight, featuring grand staircases, soaring ballrooms and rooms filled with original frescoes and stuccos. Now housing the Museum of 18th-Century Venice as part of the MUVE civic museum network, Ca’ Rezzonico invites you to explore not just art, but the lifestyle of Venice’s golden age.
The museum’s collections are displayed in rooms reconstructed and furnished to evoke the original interiors of noble Venetian life rather than neutral gallery spaces. You can admire masterworks by Canaletto, Guardi, Longhi and Giambattista Tiepolo, as well as exquisite period furniture, original Murano glass chandeliers, and historically preserved décor. The grand ballroom with its impressive ceilings and glittering lights remains a highlight, transporting you to the heyday of masked balls and lavish celebrations.
More intimate chambers, including boudoirs and private salons, are decorated with silk wall coverings, carved beds and lacquered furniture, offering a detailed look at the everyday world of Venice’s elites. The upper floors showcase Venetian applied arts, including porcelain collections and a reconstructed historic pharmacy, providing further insight into daily life and artistic tastes of the era.
Focusing on 18th-century culture, Ca’ Rezzonico is especially rewarding for those interested in the Rococo, Venetian painting, or the social history of Carnival and masquerade traditions. Combined museum passes covering other MUVE sites, such as the Doge’s Palace or Museo Correr, are often available and can provide value for those wanting to explore Venice’s rich artistic offerings.
Located just steps from a vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal, Ca’ Rezzonico is easy to reach, although some internal stairways remain despite the presence of lifts. Plan to spend at least 90 minutes to two hours exploring. Its relative distance from Venice’s busiest landmarks means the museum is usually quieter, and its canal-side terrace provides a memorable, less-crowded view of the Grand Canal.
