Set in an unfinished palazzo on the Grand Canal, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection offers an intimate counterpoint to Venice’s historic art. The core of the museum is the personal collection of American heiress Peggy Guggenheim, who lived here in the mid-20th century. Rooms showcase key works of Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, with pieces by Picasso, Pollock, Magritte, Dalí, Kandinsky and many others. Sculptures dot the canal-side terrace and small gardens, creating a relaxed, human-scale environment that is easy to navigate in an hour or two. Audio guides and wall texts are concise and accessible even if you are not an expert in modern art. Because the building is relatively small, timed tickets can help avoid queues on peak days. Many visitors pair a stop here with a stroll through the Dorsoduro neighborhood and nearby Accademia bridge for classic canal views.
