Opening Hours
The basilica has separate schedules for free church entry and paid access to the museum and terrace; opening hours shift with the liturgical calendar and season. Always check the official ticket portal for current times.
St Mark’s Basilica is famous for its golden mosaics and Byzantine-inspired domes, but many of the most memorable spaces require a paid ticket. The museum level above the main nave lets you view the glittering mosaic cycles and marble floor patterns from closer range and houses original sculptures, textiles and architectural fragments. Here you also find the famous bronze horses of St Mark, moved inside to protect them from weather and pollution. From the loggia terrace overlooking Piazza San Marco you step outside between replica horses to a sweeping view of the square, the campanile and the lagoon beyond. Crowd flow inside the church is tightly managed and modest dress is required, so plan ahead and travel light, large bags are not allowed. Timed tickets from the official system help you avoid the longest lines and are particularly useful on busy cruise-ship days.
