For the Monza Grand Prix from Milan, the simplest route depends on the day and the entrance printed on your race ticket. On Friday and Saturday, Milano Centrale to Monza FS followed by the Black Shuttle is the straightforward choice. On race Sunday, direct special trains from Milano Porta Garibaldi to Biassono-Lesmo Parco avoid the road shuttle and stop beside the circuit. Monza FS itself is not beside the track: the Autodromo is about 6.6 km away.
For the 2026 race weekend, held from 4 to 6 September, Trenord has extra trains, dedicated GP tickets and special Sunday services. These arrangements are created specifically for the event and can change from one year to the next, so use the current race-weekend plan rather than an old Monza transport blog post.
The two useful train routes from Milan
There are two station names to understand before buying anything:
- Monza FS: the main city station. It has frequent connections from Milan, but you still need the Black Shuttle or another local connection to reach the Parco di Monza.
- Biassono-Lesmo Parco: a much smaller station on the northern side of the park, directly beside a circuit entrance. On Sunday 6 September 2026, Trenord runs special direct trains here from Milano Porta Garibaldi.
The mistake is assuming that the station called simply “Monza” must be the closest one to the race. It is not. Monza FS is excellent as a transport hub, but it is in the city rather than at the circuit gates.
Route 1: Milano Centrale to Monza FS, then the Black Shuttle
This is the easiest route to understand and the most useful option across all three race days.
- Go to Milano Centrale and find a Trenord train that stops at Monza.
- Check the train number and stop list, not just the destination on the big board. A train stopping at Monza may be displayed with Lecco, Bergamo or Chiasso as its final destination.
- Get off at Monza.
- Follow temporary GP signs and staff directions for Navetta Nera, the Black Shuttle. Race-day loading is organised on the Porta Castello/Piazza Castello side of the station.
- Take the shuttle into the Parco di Monza, toward the Viale Mirabello/Viale Cavriga area near Gate G.
- Walk from the shuttle set-down to the circuit entrance, pass ticket and security checks, then continue on foot to your grandstand or general-admission sector.
If Italian departure boards are unfamiliar, the useful rule is that the large screen normally displays a train’s final destination rather than every intermediate station. Extra trains from Milano Centrale in 2026
On Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, Trenord is adding trains between Milano Centrale and Monza. The published plan has additional morning departures toward Monza between roughly 08:50 and noon, with extra returns toward Centrale from 17:00 to 20:00. Regular Milano Centrale-Lecco RegioExpress services also stop at Monza.
Check the official Trenord Grand Prix service notice before leaving your hotel. Race-weekend railway alterations can affect the S7 and other services even when the normal timetable in a saved screenshot looks perfectly sensible.
What the Black Shuttle actually does
The Black Shuttle is not a bus to your grandstand. It connects Monza railway station with the park on the Gate G side. Monza Mobilità describes the GP shuttle network as a continuous service operating approximately from 07:00 until 20:30, rather than a normal bus with a neat every-10-minutes timetable.
For 2026, the standalone shuttle ticket costs €5 return. It can also be bundled with the train from Milan. The official Monza Mobilità GP FAQ is the place to check the current shuttle operating window and purchase rules.
Once the bus stops inside the park area, keep following signs for your ingresso, meaning entrance. Gate G being nearby does not mean your seat is nearby. The circuit and surrounding park are large, and getting through the gate can still leave a substantial walk to your sector.
Route 2: Milano Porta Garibaldi to Biassono-Lesmo Parco
Race Sunday is different. Trenord’s 2026 plan includes 21 special direct services between Milano Porta Garibaldi and Biassono-Lesmo Parco, with no intermediate stops on the dedicated trains.
Outbound specials run approximately every 30 minutes from 07:20 until 12:45. For the return, the published schedule has departures from Biassono every 15 minutes from 16:40 to 17:58, then approximately every 30 minutes from 18:31 to 19:35.
The attraction is obvious: Trenord describes Biassono-Lesmo Parco as being directly at the racetrack entrance. There is no Monza FS-to-park shuttle stage.
There is still a catch. “Beside the circuit” does not mean “beside every grandstand.” You must pass the entrance and then walk through the venue. If the gate recommended on your race ticket is on a different side of the Autodromo, using the nearest railway station can simply replace a shuttle journey with a long internal walk.
Do not guess the platform at Porta Garibaldi
Milano Porta Garibaldi has both surface and underground railway areas. Find your exact train on the station departure screens and follow the displayed binario. Do not automatically follow signs for the Passante just because you are catching a suburban-looking train.
The special €5 Sunday return ticket between Porta Garibaldi and Biassono-Lesmo is valid only on the dedicated special trains and is sold online. If that product is not available for the service you want, do not board on the assumption that any Milan ticket will do.
Which route should you choose?
On Friday: Monza FS plus the Black Shuttle is the obvious public-transport plan from Milan. The €10 combined train-and-shuttle product is valid on the 2026 Friday as well as the weekend.
On Saturday: Monza FS plus the Black Shuttle remains the easiest all-round route. Biassono-Lesmo is served by the S7 corridor, but the headline non-stop Porta Garibaldi specials are a Sunday service, and the S7 has race-weekend timetable changes.
On Sunday: check the gate on your admission ticket first. Biassono-Lesmo is attractive if arriving on that side of the circuit makes sense for your sector. If your ticket directs you toward Gate G or you prefer the more heavily organised Monza station route, use Monza FS and the Black Shuttle instead.
The station nearest the circuit is not automatically the best station for your seat. At Monza, the correct gate matters almost as much as the train.
2026 GP train and shuttle tickets
Trenord has three especially useful event products for 2026:
- GP Monza Train + Black Shuttle, €10: return train travel between Milan and Monza plus two rides on the Black Shuttle between Monza FS and the Autodromo. Valid from 4 to 6 September.
- Milano Porta Garibaldi-Biassono-Lesmo, €5: return travel on the special direct trains on Sunday 6 September only. This product is sold online.
- GP Monza Trenord Day Pass, €13: return travel from a station in Lombardy to Monza or Biassono-Lesmo, including the special GP trains. Airport railway services are excluded. Trenord’s published conditions allow children aged 4 to 13 to travel free with a qualifying accompanying relative.
The airport exclusion matters. Someone landing at Malpensa cannot assume the €13 GP Day Pass covers the Malpensa Express into Milan. Treat the airport leg and race connection as separate unless the ticket conditions explicitly say otherwise.
Do you need to validate the train ticket?
Do not apply the old “stamp every Italian train ticket” rule blindly. Trenord says its digital origin-to-destination rail tickets do not require physical validation. Reloadable and integrated transport products can have separate tap or activation rules.
For a GP product, open the actual ticket before entering the platform area and follow the instructions attached to it. Keep its QR code ready for checks. A screenshot of the booking confirmation is less useful than the live ticket itself if the product uses a dynamic QR code.
The final walk is part of the journey
Three different walks tend to get mixed together in directions to Monza:
- Monza FS to the circuit: about 6.6 km according to the Autodromo. This is why the event shuttle exists. Do not accidentally start walking north simply because the station crowd appears to be doing the same.
- Black Shuttle set-down to Gate G: a further walk through the park area. The bus does not unload spectators at the security scanner or grandstand stairs.
- Circuit gate to your seat: potentially the most important walk of all. Once inside, follow the numbered grandstand and sector signs rather than continuing with the largest crowd.
At Biassono-Lesmo, the first of those stages almost disappears because the railway station is at the circuit side of the park. The internal walk does not.
Do not book a train that leaves you only a few minutes before a Formula 1 session you care about. Station crowd control, shuttle boarding, ticket inspection, security and the walk to the stand are separate stages, and none of them disappears because your rail journey from Milan is short.
Plan the return before entering the circuit
Sunday afternoon is a poor time to start wondering which Milan station you used that morning. Save the return train information and remember which side of the venue you entered from.
If you used the Black Shuttle, return toward the Gate G/Mirabello side and follow signs for Navetta Nera and Stazione FS Monza. Monza Mobilità’s published 2026 information puts the shuttle service at approximately 20:30 for the end of operations, so lingering well into the evening can remove the connection you expected to use.
If you used Biassono-Lesmo, return to that station rather than following signs for Monza FS. The dedicated direct trains to Porta Garibaldi have a defined operating window. Trenord and the Comune di Monza have also extended S7 evening service during the weekend, but some ordinary S7 journeys are modified, so check the live departure rather than assuming the direct specials continue all night.
If the race weekend sits inside a longer Italian trip, you can organize the rest of your trip around the GP day and avoid creating a tight onward connection immediately after one of the year’s largest crowd movements.
Anyone catching a high-speed or long-distance train from Milan that evening should leave a generous margin. The risky connection is rarely the 15-or-so-minute rail ride from Monza to Milan. It is getting from your seat to the correct departure platform in Milan after thousands of other spectators have started moving at the same time.
If your original plan fails
You miss the direct Biassono train
Check Trenord’s live options rather than waiting automatically for another special. If the dedicated service you wanted is gone, Monza FS plus the Black Shuttle may still provide a workable route while the shuttle is operating.
You arrive at Milano Centrale instead of Porta Garibaldi
The two Milan stations are not the same place. Metro line M2 connects Centrale FS with Garibaldi FS, but changing stations costs time. If you are already at Centrale and do not specifically need the Sunday Biassono special, check whether a suitable train to Monza FS is leaving sooner before crossing Milan merely to follow your original plan.
The board does not say Monza
Check the stops. Fermate means stops. A service advertised for Lecco, Bergamo or Chiasso can still be exactly the train you need to Monza.
You consider using the M1 metro and bus instead
Monza does not have a Milan Metro station. The ordinary alternative is M1 to Sesto 1° Maggio FS followed by bus Z221, but GP weekend is precisely when this route becomes less ordinary. For 4 to 6 September 2026, Autoguidovie has published a Z221 diversion with several Monza stops suppressed, including the normal Monza FS-area stop in one direction.
That makes the metro-plus-bus combination a backup to check live, not the default route to improvise after leaving Milan.
Do not bring a suitcase to the circuit
Someone travelling straight from an airport or checking out of a Milan hotel needs to solve luggage storage before heading to the Autodromo. Under the circuit’s published 2026 admission rules, bags, backpacks and luggage with a capacity above 15 litres are prohibited.
This is not just an inconvenience on a packed regional train. A normal cabin suitcase can leave you at the circuit gate with an item that cannot enter. Check the current prohibited-items list on the official Monza GP ticket page before packing for race day.
Reduced mobility and children
Monza Mobilità states that its GP shuttles can be used by passengers with disabilities. The Autodromo also operates a separate accessibility and accreditation procedure for eligible spectators. Check the circuit’s arrangements before race day rather than assuming the railway station closest on a map produces the shortest accessible journey.
The Black, Blue and Purple event shuttles do not have a children’s discount under Monza Mobilità’s 2026 rules. This is separate from Trenord’s child conditions on the GP Day Pass and separate again from the circuit’s admission rules for children.
Italian words that make race-day signs easier
- Binario: railway platform or track.
- Fermate: stops.
- Uscita: exit.
- Ingresso: entrance.
- Navetta: shuttle.
- Navetta Nera / Linea Nera: Black Shuttle.
- Stazione FS: railway station.
- Capolinea: terminus or end stop.
- Andata e ritorno / A/R: return or round trip.
- Autodromo: racetrack.
- Parco di Monza: the large park surrounding the circuit.
The useful race-morning sequence is simple: confirm the Milan departure station, confirm the train number and binario, remember whether you are using Monza FS or Biassono-Lesmo, and read the entrance printed on your circuit ticket before following the crowd. That last check can save considerably more walking than choosing a train because its station name happens to sound closest to Formula 1.
