What to do if you miss a train in Italy 🚆

The worst move is panic-buying another ticket before checking the one you already have.

A regional ticket, Frecciarossa Base fare, Italo Flex ticket and railway-caused missed connection can all have completely different solutions. Even a one-hour rescue window can make the difference between being rebooked and paying again.

How to read Italy accommodation listings before you book

An Italian accommodation listing can be completely accurate and still leave out the detail that determines whether the room works for you.

“Elevator available” does not mean there are no steps. “Air-conditioning included” does not mean you control it. “Double or twin” may describe a preference rather than a guaranteed bed setup. And 24-hour building access does not automatically mean you can arrive for the first time at midnight. ⚠️

Before paying, ask the property to confirm the details for your exact room category and travel dates.

Copy and send this:

“Can you please confirm in writing the exact bed arrangement, whether there is a step-free route from the street to the room, whether guest-controlled cooling will be active on our dates, and the latest guaranteed check-in time if our transport is delayed?”

For the CIN, copy the complete code from the listing and check it through Ricerca CIN at bdsr.ministeroturismo.gov.it. A valid result confirms that the code exists, it is not a quality or fraud guarantee.

Save this before booking your accommodation in Italy. ✅

The best souvenirs in Italy might be hiding in the supermarket aisle 🇮🇹🛒

Forget the fridge magnet. I’d rather bring home something I’ll actually eat, cook with or give to someone who loves Italy.

A few supermarket finds worth looking for: Pantelleria IGP capers, regional pasta, taralli, cantuccini, gianduiotti, Baci, saffron, pistachio cream, good balsamic vinegar, olive oil… and yes, even Italian toothpaste. 😂

My rule: buy something with a place, a story or a flavour you don’t normally see at home. Look for DOP/IGP labels, check where it was produced, and read the ingredients instead of trusting the Italian flag on the front.

One important warning before filling your suitcase: ✈️ vacuum-packed does not automatically mean customs-approved. Meat, cheese, fresh food, liquids and some agricultural products can be restricted depending on where you’re flying home.

Save this for your last supermarket run in Italy. 🇮🇹

A better plan gives each day its own shape:

📍 one part of the city at a time
🚶 one continuous walking route
🍝 food where you already are
🎟️ booking reminders before it is too late
🗺️ a rhythm that makes sense once you are on the street

Day 1 and Day 2 should feel different, but they should both feel easy to follow.

That is what a real 2-day Florence itinerary should do.
